Mid-Month Book Look: What I’m Reading in January

How is January already halfway over? I feel like the year just started. Buffalo is really settling into winter, which is pretty, but THAT WIND. It’s not fun.

What I'm Reading in January

Despite the weather (or perhaps because of it?) I’ve been doing some great reading! My first read of the month was Hall of Small Mammals by Thomas Pierce, which I can’t say enough good things about. Then I blazed through So We Read On by Maureen Corrigan and The Great Gatsby for Jazz Age January, and I am halfway through Flappers by Judith Mackrell.

I also found myself hankering for a romance novel after listening to the most recent Bookrageous podcast, and I devoured One Good Earl Deserves a Lover by Sarah MacLean. I still have trouble with how formulaic romance novels are, but I enjoyed this novel more than the first book in the Rules of Scoundrels series, A Rogue by Any Other Name. The heroine is a super-smart lady who wants to be ruined — for science! She’s spunky and bold, and I loved her.

Lastly, I really enjoyed Girl Runner by Carrie Snyder, and I just started reading A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara. I loved The People in the Trees, and I’m so excited for Yanagihara’s new book! I was actually a little bit nervous to start it because my expectations are so high.

  1. Great list of books this month! I have Girl Runner on my radar and a copy of A Little Life waiting for me! I’ve been in a bit of a slump lately and need something to break me out of it! I just started The Girl on the Train last night…hopefully that will be a slump breaker.

What say you?
