Literary Blog Hop Giveaway

Hello, and welcome to the Literary Blog Hop! This is a thrice yearly giveaway hop hosted by Leeswammes’ Blog. I, along with 38 other bloggers, am giving away a book of literary merit to one lucky reader!

If you’re a regular reader, it’s lovely to see you again, and if you’re visiting Books Speak Volumes for the first time, I’m thrilled to meet you! I’m super excited to participate in this giveaway for the first time. I couldn’t decide which book I wanted to give away, so I’m letting you choose — kind of. I picked my three favorite books published in 2013, and the winner gets to pick which one he/she would like to receive!

The Books:

Burial Rites by Hannah Kent

Re-imagining the final months of Agnes Magnusdottir, the last person to be executed in Iceland in 1828, Burial Rites is an achingly beautiful historical novel. Kent presents a complex, morally ambiguous woman struggling to find her place in a society eager to judge and condemn her. The writing is gorgeous, and this book has stuck with me for months.

A Constellation of Vital Phenomena by Anthony Marra

Marra’s debut novel is a complex web of stories set in Chechnya  from 1994 to 2004. Spanning two wars and centering on six main characters, it is a gorgeous, moving novel about the destruction of war and the ties that bind us together. Marra expertly creates vivid, multidimensional characters, and his writing is rich and beautiful.

Life After Life by Kate Atkinson

If you had the chance to do your life over and over again, would you ever get it right? Atkinson explores this fascinating concept. Ursula Todd is born on a snowy night in 1910 and dies immediately. However, she is reborn, and this time she survives. Her life takes on a pattern of death and rebirth, but each life takes a different path. Atkinson’s writing is fantastic, and I was surprised by the page-turning quality of this lengthy book.

  1. I just saw “A Constellation of Vital Phenomena” at work today! It looked interesting! I think that’d be a great one to add to my way too full shelf!

  2. I think I’d have to choose Life After Life. I’ve never even read Kate Atkinson before (HORROR OF HORRORS) but I’ve heard so many good things about this book and the premise is fascinating. Thank you, O Bookish Enabler! šŸ˜‰

    • Ha! See, I decided to offer three books figuring that EVERYONE would have at least one book they hadn’t read yet. Here you go, blowing my theory less than 8 hours after the giveaway started!

  3. Goodness i would definitely choose “A Constellation of Vital Phenomena”. I had not heard of it before so checked it out. It sounds just fascinating.

  4. I’ve never read anything about the war in Chechnya, so I’d choose A Constellation of Vital Phenomena. Thanks for the chance to win!

  5. Wow. It is tough to choose, since three of these have been on my TBR list for quite awhile. I’d have to go with Burial Rites (though a close race with A Constellation of Vital Phenomena!). I’m so excited to have found your blog, as we have similar reading tastes. Heading over to find you on Twitter, Goodreads, and adding you to my Feedly account so I can follow your reviews!

  6. It’s my first time here, and thank you for the giveaway! I would love to win “Life after Life” to offer it as a present to my best friend. I have read it and I really think it is a great, inspiring book šŸ™‚

  7. Thanks for the giveaway. I would probably choose Life After Life. I started reading it but had to give it back to the library. I absolutely loved Marra’s novel.

  8. I really want to read Life after Life, but I also want to read Burial Rites…I want Life after Life a teensy bit more, though…Thanks so much for the great giveaway. michelle_willms(at)yahoo(dot)com

  9. This is a really tough decision! I loved Life After Life and A Constellation of Vital Phenomena, but I haven’t read Burial Rites yet….I think I would have to go with the Anthony Marra book.

  10. First time on your blog and I like the books you review! I now follow you on Bloglovin’ and @twitter!

Book of choice would be “Burial Rites”.

  11. They all look really good but right now I’m most interested in Burial Rites by Hannah Kent. I hope I can change my mind though. Thanks very much.

  12. I’d like to read BURIAL RITES. But I want to tell anyone who hasn’t read A CONSTELLATION OF VITAL PHENOMENA: read it; it’s the best book I’ve read this year or last year.

  13. Hi! I’d love to win either Burial Rites or Life After Life (I can’t seem to make up my mind). Thank you sooo much for the giveaway šŸ˜€
